World Mosquito Day: August 20, 2020

This year, August 20th is recognized as World Mosquito Day, which brings awareness to mosquito control on a global scale. These bloodsuckers are the deadliest organism on the planet, claiming the lives of over 2.7 million people each year; that’s why it’s important to educate and urge the public to take all necessary precautions, especially during prime breeding season.

There are a number of ways your business can observe this day by bringing awareness to both mosquitoes and your brand, especially amid Coronavirus (COVID-19). While tourism has significantly declined this year, that hasn’t stopped mosquitoes — particularly of the container-inhabiting Aedes genus — from traveling and thriving in new areas of North America. When mosquitoes migrate, new public health threats are introduced to those territories.

Most people think of mosquito bites as merely an annoyance and rarely take into account the dangers these bloodsuckers pose to themselves, their families, and pets. Educating your customers and the public on mosquito-borne illness (like malaria, dengue fever, West Nile virus, chikungunya, yellow fever, Zika, encephalitis, and parasitic canine heartworm) will help drive your community to take action. During these uncertain times, one tactic that is sure to drive business are incentive programs for your customers. Promotions, discounts, bundles, and referral rewards are another way you can bolster your mosquito control efforts. You can promote these specials through mailers, brochures, and social media directing existing customers and prospects to a specific landing page.

In your marketing efforts, always highlight prevention techniques like removing standing water and wearing EPA-approved insect repellent, but emphasize that mosquito control isn’t always foolproof. Most importantly, let your audience know that your business can provide more effective solutions to their problems.
