Q: My customer has Psocids and is claiming they bite- Is this true? Portland, Oregon

A:

Psocids, also known as booklice, are actually not true biting lice but from the order Pscoptera. Psocids are very small, approximately 3/16th of an inch in size, and can occur indoors in large numbers. Typically, they feed on mold and can be considered a secondary stored product pest. According to the Illinois Department of Health, they can inflict pinprick bites, but do not suck blood or transmit disease to humans. Treatment starts with correcting humidity issues that is causing mold or finding the infested food item. For more treatment options, contact your local Target Office or Sales representative.
