August 20th is World Mosquito Day: Join Us in Raising Awareness of the Importance of Mosquito Control

By Aris Gharapetian, Director of Marketing, Target Specialty Products

World Mosquito Day is observed annually on August 20th. This day of recognition began well over a hundred years ago when Dr. Donald Ross of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine was credited with discovering the transmission of malaria to humans by the mosquito. More than one million people die each year, mostly young children in parts of Africa and Asia. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 350-500 million cases of malaria occur worldwide annually.

Although local malaria transmission in the United States was eliminated since the 1950’s, mosquitoes continue to threaten the health and of us here in the United States as mosquitoes act as vectors of other diseases such as Chikungunya, West Nile Virus and most recently Zika virus. The American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) uses World Mosquito Day to raise awareness of the importance of mosquito control. We hope you will join this effort and educate the public in your part of the country.

When pest management professionals perform mosquito control they take on the very important job of protecting public health from the threat of mosquitoes. We use this World Mosquito Day to encourage you to continue the work of educating the public of the great importance of protecting themselves and their property from the threat of the mosquito.
