Temprid – the easy answer for hard-to-kill pests

By Joe Barile, BCE, Technical Service lead, Pest Management & Public Health, Bayer Environmental Science

Spiders, scorpions and bed bugs have developed a reputation for being tough to kill.

But they don’t have to be. Temprid FX combines a co-milled, dual-active formula with a flexible label that delivers powerful pest control inside and out. I’d like to go over the benefits of Temprid and what makes it stand apart from other pest products.

Before I get into the specific details, here are the Temprid features at a glance:

  • Powerful, broad-spectrum insecticide that controls over 50 pests
  • Can be applied indoors and outdoors, including foliar applications on non-blooming plants
  • Proven to reduce callbacks by over 50% (Bayer PMP Callback Studies, 2007-2009)
  • Effective against key public health pests (including mosquitoes, ticks, etc.) that may transmit various diseases and viruses
  • Enhanced label directions for providing optimum control of scorpions
  • Also ideal for use on occasional invaders
  • Provides contact activity and systemic action
  • Available in a convenient, monodose bottle – exact dose for mixing with one gallon of water

One of the big differences between Temprid FX and combination products that are simply mixtures, is that as the imidacloprid in Temprid acts on the target pests, it makes the pyrethroid in it, β-cyfluthrin, work more effectively and faster. As it starts to act on the nervous system, it opens the sodium channels of the nerve system of the insect, and that’s the target site for pyrethroids. Not only does it open them, it holds them open so the pyrethroid can get in faster. This is why Temprid is very fast in regard to mortality on pests and very effective on hard-to-kill pests with pyrethroid resistance, because you have an active ingredient that’s actually opening the door for pyrethroids to get in to where it needs to work.

Imidacloprid – Binds to receptors on post-synaptic membrane

Overstimulates nerve, opening the voltage sensitive Na+ channels

β-cyfluthrin – Preferentially binds to open (activated) Na+ channels

Holds Na+ channel open, causing nerve depolarization

Imidacloprid overstimulates nerve cells, enhancing potency of β-cyfluthrin

Co-milling makes the difference

Another difference between Temprid and other mixture products is the co-milling. At Bayer, we’ve taken the time to co-mill the two active ingredients together, on every crystal in the formulation. That means that every crystal that gets onto or into the pest is going to deliver both those active ingredients at the same time. The active ingredient stays suspended in the tank, provides greater coverage of treated surfaces and ensures pests are evenly exposed to both active ingredients. That’s how we get this terrific efficacy against hard-to-kill pests.

The #1 product for bed bugs

In the Pest Management industry, Temprid is considered the number one product for bed bugs. Its dual mode of action controls bed bugs that are resistant to pyrethroids and also kills bed bug eggs. It also has a flexible label that allows applications indoors and directly to tufts, seams, folds, and edges of mattresses.

Effective ant control

When it comes to exterior and perimeter ant control, the systemic action of imidacloprid controls the plant feeding of insects like scales, aphids and mealybugs, that produce honeydew. That’s the excretion they create feeding on plant sap as a waste. It’s very carbohydrate rich, which attracts and draws foraging ants to the perimeter zone close to buildings. Temprid FX controls honeydew producing insects so there is less foraging pressure on the exterior perimeter of the building.

Reduced spider callbacks

Temprid FX is also terrific on spiders. Below are results from a trial done in Michigan focused on spider management. We asked the pest company to apply Temprid at normal label rates and apply as they normally do in compliance with the label. Over a four-month cycle, they treated 299 accounts, 98% of which were residential. They had zero callbacks during this period. This is compared to their standard treatment with a labeled pyrethroid, in which they treated 376 accounts over a three-month cycle. They had 32 callbacks, or 8.5%. You can see where this particular combination product delivered better results in controlling this very difficult pest.

Spider Control Results – Michigan

  • Low-pressure exterior, power spray, with limited (<2% of accounts) interior, C&C or spot treatments
  • On average, 10 gallon solution per account: to sill plate and 1st row siding, gutter, over hangs, soffits, and around window and door frames
  • Fences and out-buildings (sheds etc.) treated if present

Temprid

  • April 8 to August 8 (4 months)
  • 299 accounts (98% residential)
  • 0 callbacks – 100% success!

PMP standard treatment

  • May 16 to August 8 (3 months)
  • 376 accounts (98% residential)
  • 32 callbacks – 8.5% callbacks – 9 required a second callback

Strong against scorpions

Bayer also worked with a PMP cooperator in Texas where four routes were selected with a history of significant scorpion activity. Two routes were treated with Temprid and two were treated with the standard pyrethroid. The average use pattern was three gallons per 1,000 square feet. It’s a dry environment, so the label rate per 1,000 square feet went out in three gallons of water dilution to make sure there was optimal deposit over the areas where scorpions were active. The results were 2.9% callbacks with Temprid and 7.3% callbacks with the pyrethroid. Again, you can see the contribution of the neonicotinoid pyrethroid combination complementing each other against a difficult-to-control pest.

PMP Cooperator Trial – Texas

Four routes were selected with a history of large numbers of scorpions.

  • Perimeter applications: Two routes were given Temprid, two were given pyrethroid
  • Average use was 3 gallons per 1,000 square feet, uniformed for both treatments
    (At maintenance label rates)

Results

  • Temprid 2.9% callbacks (18 out of 620)
  • Pyrethroid 7.3% callbacks (35 out of 482)
