Mosquito Biology and Development

Mosquitoes develop through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. How long each stage lasts depends on the species and environmental conditions, particularly temperature. Because mosquitoes require standing water to complete development, the immature stages present the most efficient opportunity for control.

Larvae develop in:

Mosquito Identification, Behavior, and Habitat

Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes are a common issue and a significant public health threat, transmitting diseases including St. Louis encephalitis, Western and Eastern equine encephalitis, and West Nile virus. They measure approximately 3.96 to 4.25 millimeters long and appear brown with darker wings, thorax, proboscis, and tarsi, with a lighter brown head and midsection. Pale, narrow abdominal bands form distinctive half-moon shapes. The females will wait for standing water to lay eggs, thus no water, no eggs.

Culex mosquitoes are active from dusk to dawn, whereas Aedes species are more active during morning and afternoon hours. Both species rest in tall grass, weeds, and brush near human activity and often shelter in garages, sheds, or beneath structures to survive colder conditions. Typically an outdoor threat, they may enter structures but are vulnerable to air-conditioned environments.

In extreme temperatures, mosquitoes may seek shelter in enclosed spaces:

• Under homes

• Basements

Mosquitoes are also vectors of other serious diseases such as dengue fever, yellow fever, chikungunya, Zika virus, and malaria.
